Face of the Day: Work Appropriate Makeup! (5/30/13)

Yay for another Face of the Day post! Today I'm going to do a post on what makeup I wore to work! Depending on your workplace, you may have to tone it down or even tone it up! I decided not to wear any bronzer or blush today, but that of course is a personal choice :) Lasted me a good 13.5 hours (from 9AM-10:30PM). Success!!!

Review of Elf Studio Makeup Remover Pen

Elf Studio Makeup Remover Pen

Claims: Quickly remove or correct small makeup smudges, smears and mistakes without having to take off the rest of your makeup! The gentle and non-greasy formula erases even long wearing and waterproof makeup for flawless touch ups, perfect for throwing in your purse or gym bag when you're on-the-go! Infused with Vitamin E, Cucumber and Chamomile to moisturize and condition skin.Price: $3.00
Size: .07 oz/2.2 g
Where Can I Buy: Elf, Target

I bought this at Target on Memorial Day Weekend and I'm loving it! This is very convenient to throw in my makeup bag and carry around when need be!

The cap for this makeup remover pen is very secure-- I've had previous Elf products (such as their liquid eyeliner) that did not have a secure cap and it pissed me out! The spongelike tip of the makeup remover pen is neither gentle nor rough-- I did not have any irritation when I was correcting my massive eyeliner fail the other day. I have tried removing Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal in Deep Blue using this Makeup Remover Pen and it worked better than I expected. While I did have to use a Q-tip to clean it up, the Makeup Remover Pen worked its magic and made it so that it only took a couple swipes of the q-tips across my eyelids and I was able to clean off the mess. I did expect to use a Q-tip or some absorbent though, how else will the rest of the makeup be removed completely off your face? The formula is non-greasy, which is something I did like a lot-- my favorite makeup remover (Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover) is extremely greasy.

However, one thing I did not expect was how easily the Pen stained from the makeup that was removed. I don't think the I don't think the makeup remover pen is moisturizing or conditioning necessarily, but it did not dry my skin out which is a plus! Overall, I highly recommend this makeup remover pen for quick and easy touch ups! Just make sure to carry around q-tips (or tissues) along for easy clean ups!

Nails of the Day: 5/27/13

Once more, I am procrastinating on studying for my MCAT class right now, so I painted my nails! I just recently bought the new Sephora by OPI - Life's a Beach Mini Kit, the color I am trying out right now is It's Hippo to Be Square. It's a beautiful lavender color that is very opaque on the nails, one coat would've sufficed except for the fact that I'm such a horrid painter that I needed two coats lol. I used Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails UV Top Coat on top of It's Hippo to Be Square

From left to right: Sephora by OPI's It's Hippo to be Square and Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails UV Top Coat

The whole Life's a Beach Kit was $36; it contains 10 nail polishes each containing .127 oz. I usually don't buy full size nail polishes cause I have a hard time finishing it. I haven't yet tried all the nail polishes in this set yet, so I can not vouch for it being a good buy, if anyone wants a review on this set please let me know and I'll be happy to do so. Happy Monday!

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hill's Brow Wiz and Brow Gel

From left to right: Anastasia Clear Brow Gel and Brow Wiz (Brunette)

Anastasia Beverly Hill's Brow Wiz
Price: $21
Shades: Caramel, Ash Blonde, Medium Ash, Brunette, Ebony, Soft Brown
Size: .085 g
Where to Buy: AnastasiaSephora

Anastasia Beverly Hill's Clear Brow Gel
Price: $22 (full size), $10 (mini size with tweezers)
Size: .28 g
Where to Buy: AnastasiaSephora

I have to admit, I probably have been holding out on filling in my eyebrows for the longest time. I was hesitant towards it, I've had relatives that have tattooed their eyebrows and it looked absolutely horrific-- it scared me into thinking that I would do the same. Just recently I decided to give my eyebrows a try. I went with Anastasia, a brand I knew had a reputation for having really good eyebrow pencils. I then purchased the Brow Wiz in Brunette and the Clear Brow Gel to set.

Swatch of the Brow Wiz in Brunette (Left is one swipe, Right is an opaque swatch)

The Anastasia Brow Wiz in Brunette deposited color nicely onto my eyebrows. I have occasionally added more color then necessary, but the spoolie at the end of the Brow Wiz blended the color evenly. Due to my thick eyebrows, I went for a color that was darker to frame my eyes while filling in my sparse gap I had. The packaging of this brow pencil was very handy. I love the convenience of not having to sharpening brow pencils. However, I find that the top cap of the brow pencil has gotten loose. For the $21 that I spent on it, I expected it to be sealed tight, especially on a product that I will carry around in my makeup bag and use everyday.

The Anastasia Clear Brow Gel is sets my unruly eyebrows in place. While I do get my eyebrows threaded once a month, my eyebrows have a tendency to stay put. Using this brow gel, my eyebrows were able to stay in place for a 10 hour work day, something that is very impressive in Florida heat! The brow gel did not degrade one it. I find that the Brow Gel has a tendency to sometimes have a little too much product, but that's something that is easily fixed if one rubs of the excess gel on the side of the container.

These two products work very well as a pair. I unfortunately do not recommend using the Brow Wiz by itself, as it does not stand true to its long-lasting claim. The product for me lasted for about four hours without any brow gel. For the $21 that I spent on it, I would've liked it to last a lot longer without anything to stay in place. However, used in conjunction with the brow gel, my eyebrows stayed exactly the same for over a 10 hour workday  (haven't tested any longer than that though unfortunately). I highly recommend these two products together, I am always very satisfied using it and it seems to me that this is a product that I will probably use for a long time!

Nails of the Day!

I was totally procrastinating on studying for my summer classes that I felt like painting my nails (which is very rare, I don't tend to do my nails at all). I am using Sephora's nail polish in Gold Digger and Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails UV Top Coat. For most of my nails, it took only one coat of the nail polish for it to apply in the opacity that I want. It's a lovely color, I will certainly be using this color more often.

From Left to Right: Sephora's Gold Digger and Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails UV Top Coat

I've purchased Gold Digger (.15 oz) in a nail wand set in February and I've had the Sally Hansen Top Coat for years. The nail wand set is no longer sold in Sephora but the is still sold online at Ebay and other various online dealers. I purchased the Sally Hansen UV Top Coat (.45 fl oz/13.3 mL) with a French Manicure set which I believe is still in most drugstores.

Review of Estee Lauder DayWear BB Cream

Estee Lauder- DayWear BB Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Cream

Coverage: Light to Medium
Price: $39
Size: 1 fl oz/30 mL
Shade Range:  2 colors, Light and Medium

BB Creams are being marketed as an all-in-one facial cosmetic product. They are supposed replace your moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer, and sunblock. While it would be incredibly convenient if there was a product exists, unfortunately this BB cream does not live up to the claim.

This product is too drying to be used as solely as a moisturizer (even  the ladies at the Estee Lauder makeup counter think so). I highly recommend you use a moisturizer underneath this product, because i have seen dry patches on my skin if I use this product without a moisturizer. The BB Cream does not last by itself without any makeup setting powder, spray, or primer, probably due to the hot, humid weather that we have in Florida (for those who aren't familiar with Florida weather, it is pretty much summer for 9-10 months in Florida). The wear is, however, better in Florida winter. During the summer, the product breaks down within the first hour without any setting powder or primer. With those two aforementioned products however, the wear is increased to four hours. During the winter however, the product starts breaking down after three hours without any setting powder or primer. With a primer and/or a setting powder, the product has lasted me through an eight hour workday! The BB cream was able to cover some redness and hyper pigmentation that I have.

The BB cream comes out of the tube in a thick consistency and applies smoothly. I prefer to use either my hands with this product or a sponge. The packaging of the BB cream is very travel friendly: there is no risk of breakage and the size is compact. The one major downside about this product is the lack of shade ranges, only 2 shades! Light is my best match, the medium was to dark for my skin tone.

I've had this BB cream for a significant time (a year +). Unfortunately, I have to say I do not like this BB cream and would not recommend it for people living in warm, humid climates. Due to my experience with this product in the winter, this product has the potential to suit those who live in cooler climates year round.

Introduction to asianhomie101 - Addicted to Makeup!

My name is Pauline addicted to makeup. I am a late bloomer however, I didn't really started using makeup until my freshman year in college, and now I am seriously addicted. My makeup collection is decently evenly distributed between high-end and drugstore (haven't seriously counted though, so it could go either way really fast).

I am a Vietnamese Canadian American, born in Montreal, Canada on November 20, 1992 and immigrated to the US when I was six. I currently live in Florida. I am now about to enter my third year of college, double majoring in Biology and Chemistry. I have two younger sisters, aged 18 and 6.

I hope you guys will come to enjoy my blog. I will post as often as I can, giving insight on various beauty related topics. Until next time!

<3 Pauline
